Students and staff at Oaklands Junior School have been celebrating the opening of the Big Red Bus, their new learning and chill-out zone which is located in the school grounds. It has been created with support from the Social Value Portal, the Legal & General Homes team and our sub-contractors, Buxted Construction, RB Group and DJ Mace & Sons.
Crowthorne-based Oaklands Junior School has a ‘Thinking Schools’ philosophy that focuses on fostering valuable life skills such as independence and ambition. As well as the Big Red Bus relaxation space, the primary school already provides engaging and exciting spaces for learning like a large library, computer lab and climbing wall.
The idea for the project came from the school’s leadership team, who wanted to provide a dynamic space to teach intervention groups and children with special needs as well as a quiet space for children to read outside of lesson time.
The Big Red Bus was funded by a £3,000+ donation from Legal & General Homes. From building and painting the bookshelves and storage to providing the bus with lighting and internet connections, our team were kept busy creating the space; paving slabs decorated by the pupils themselves added the final touch before the unveiling.
Stuart Lee from Oaklands Junior School said: “The Big Red Bus allows us to provide a new and exciting learning space for children of all ages and capabilities and it has been fantastic to see the pupils exploring the facilities. After two years, we are all delighted to finally complete our big red bus project.
“We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from Window Wize and Legal and General Homes their contributions mean that we can continue engaging and inspiring our children in a flexible and fun space.”
John Allan, Managing Director at Legal & General Homes commented: “We understand the importance of getting involved and giving something back to the local community, and this has been a wonderful project to support. Oaklands Junior School has an inspirational philosophy and it has been great helping them express this through this project. We are proud of this collaboration and hope that the children really enjoy the new addition to the school for years to come.”
