Myth-busting and marshmallow bricks at Kennel Lane School Careers Day

July 22, 2019

We had a brilliant day when we visited Kennel Lane School in Bracknell during their Careers Week on 12 July.

Kennel Lane School is the catchment special needs school for our Buckler’s Park development in Crowthorne, Berkshire, and its dedicated team play a vital role in supporting children and their families in the area. In fact, many of the people supported by our office charity this year – Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap – went to school there, so we’ve heard firsthand what a special place it is.

We were there to enhance the students’ knowledge of the construction industry while working on their communication skills and – of course – having some fun. We kicked things off with a construction myth-busting game, debunking beliefs like ‘all construction workers are men’.

After break time the Key Stage 3 students became project managers, ‘buying’ materials of marshmallows and spaghetti and coordinating their team to build the largest structure. Things got pretty competitive, as the activity culminated in a nail-biting prize giving for the best one.

We finished off by asking the pupils to create advertising posters for construction, based on everything they had learned throughout the day – make sure you head to our social media pages to see the results.

Our own team had a fantastic time too. Days like these are as much a learning experience for our employees as the students involved and they always take away skills and knowledge that they can apply in the office and on site.

Alison Barringer, Key Stage 3 lead at Kennel Lane School, said of the day: “The construction ambassadors were brilliant and organised really thoughtful activities for our learners. Our Key Stage 3 learners were so engrossed in the construction challenge they didn’t want to go out for break time. The myth buster discussion activity really got the learners thinking about the construction industry and they asked some varied and interesting questions that were answered by the ambassadors. Thank you Legal & General Homes for a lovely morning.”

We look forward to working with Kennel Lane School again in the future.
